Finally, the reveal of our modern farmhouse kitchen! My husband has been asking me to put this up for a long time, and finally I am getting it done! As a recap, in October, we bought a new house. The house had great bones, but needed some updating. The kitchen was the first room we wanted to tackle. Head to this post to see the design plans, inspiration and moodboard. I love how the kitchen has turned out. It has become the heart of our home and a gathering space whenever we have friends and family over.
In case you missed it, here is a before photo.
For the most part, the structure stayed the same. But, we moved the electric cooktop (and changed it to gas!) to the outside wall. We built a large pantry, removed the soffit and flourescent lighting. Of course, took out the tile and replaced it with durable wood laminate flooring. Even though the house was built in ’63 and is a little on the mid-century side, this kitchen feels so right in here. There is enough traditional in the house that this kitchen doesn’t feel out of place and it is slowly starting to determine the rest of the spaces in the house.
This room is so magical now. We have hosted a couple cooking parties for a ton of college students and it’s been perfect. My sister-in-law gathered all the boys in the family and taught them to cook authentic Italian food and it was perfect. We have hosted numerous birthdays, holidays, and game nights here and it has been perfect.
Details like the walnut countertops and floating shelves bring in the warmth the space needed to offset all the white. The subway tile and farmhouse sink keep it classic and simple. And having white quartz counters keep the primary surfaces durable and can easily handle anything. The gray veining brings enough movement and helps it look classic enough, but in a modern material.
Ah, the pantry. I love this pantry. It’s a total of 5 feet wide x 2′ deep. It’s just enough for all our food, water, grocery bags and even a small plug-in stick vac. These barstools were hand me downs. I wasn’t sure at the begining if I was going to keep them, but they seem to work well, so for now they stay.
We bought these solid walnut 2″ thick boards at a local hardwood supply company, Austin Hardwoods for all you locals. These were a BEAR to install so it might be a long time before I can convice Sean to install another set of these!!
To save money we went with off the rack – RTA stock cabinetry in white shaker and light gray shaker. We got them from a local company, 405 Cabinets, but to customize them we built a custom hood and an island surround. We paint matched the color so they blend perfectly.
Lighting came from West Elm and Houzz. Can you believe those lights over the sink are under $35 each! I love the big glass pendants with the gold stems. It’s just enough modern and classic combined.
And the hardware came from House of Antique Hardware. They are unlaquered brass, but to make them look more aged, I quicked the process. They now have a beautiful patina on them that I love.
Our dining room is part of the kitchen, so it got an upgrade as well! When we moved into the house, the previous owners really wanted to keep their chandelier. I knew that we weren’t going to be keeping it in the long run so I let them take it with them when they left. The room was left without light, so it was like Christmas when we were able to install this one from West Elm. I LOVE all the capiz shells! But, let me tell you, unwrapping Each. And. Every. One. Of these shells was TIRING!
The best thing about this kitchen is that it’s completely DIY’d. Sean and I installed everything from the flooring, cabinetry, tile and so much more. I’ll be detailing out all the projects in future posts, but I couldn’t hold onto these pictures any longer!
This makeover is that our kitchen cost less than $15,000 to redo. It was A LOT of hard work and being creative with our time, money and resources. But it was so worth it! I’ll have to detail where all the costs went, but for now, you can just look at these pretty pictures.
How do you think it turned out?

You did a lovely job! I’m planning a kitchen remodel soon and am so glad to find inspiration. I plan to do white shaker cabinets too but I hope to use soapstone for the counters. 🤞🏻

Soapstone would look amazing!
